Jollibee aims to become Asia's top fast-food chain in 2015

By: Krista Angela M. Montealegre, InterAksyon.com November 18, 2013

"We have to make priorities because we are not yet even present in Indonesia with a big population. We're not even present in Malaysia. Asia is growing faster than Europe. The development potential is actually, the rate is faster,” Baysa said.

MANILA – Jollibee Foods Corp (JFC) is angling to become Asia's biggest restaurant chain in the next two years, as it ramps up the expansion of Burger King amid growing competition in the premium hamburger segment.

On the sidelines of the Asia CEO Awards last week, JFC chief financial officer Ysmael Baysa said the homegrown fastfood giant is "growing practically everywhere" at double-digit rates.

"Among all Asian, not just fast-food but restaurant companies including fast-food, Jollibee can be the biggest," Baysa said. JFC earlier said it could become Asia’s biggest restaurant chain by 2020.

At end-September, JFC operated the largest food service network in the Philippines with 2,121 stores across the flagship Jollibee, Chowking, Greenwich, Red Ribbon, Mang Inasal and Burger King brands. It had 575 stores abroad, including Yonghe King, Hong Zhuang Yuan and San Pin Wang.

JFC also has a 50 percent interest in joint ventures for Highlands Coffee (Vietnam, Philippines) at 77, Pho 24 (Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan) at 60 and Sabu (China) at 6.

"It's possible that we can achieve that without entering a new market. If we enter a new market and if we make another acquisition, then our chances are even bigger," Baysa said.

So far, a Japanese firm dominates the Asian market with more than 2,000 outlets in the world's third largest economy. However, JFC's sales are bigger than that of the Japanese company, Ysmael said, citing data from market research firm Euromonitor.

JFC is present in China, the United States, the Middle East and Southeast Asian markets such as Vietnam, Brunei and Singapore. It has yet to enter Europe, considered a "very attractive market."

"We have to make priorities because we are not yet even present in Indonesia with a big population. We're not even present in Malaysia. Asia is growing faster than Europe. The development potential is actually, the rate is faster,” Baysa said.

JFC is already in the largest categories in the Philippines and acquisitions “will not be as frequent as before” because it has already established its foundation in China, he said.

Known for its brands in the mass market segment, Jollibee is stepping up the expansion of Burger King, adding 10-15 stores to its network next year after opening 9-10 branches in 2013.

This is part of the company's plan to roll out more stores next year. The Jollibee group opened 137 stores across all brands in the first nine months of the year.

“We are actually expanding Burger King, but Burger King is geared for the AB market. This market by definition is smaller compared with mass market like Jollibee. We are expanding it but we don’t open as many stores as in other brands," Baysa said.

He said Burger King has been posting "very good" sales as it faces a growing number of competitors in the premium hamburger segment amid the expansion of T.G.I. Fridays and Army Navy.

"The upper income segment is growing in the Philippines so more and more people are able to afford the premium products," Baysa said.

JFC gained a foothold in the high-end segment of the hamburger category in the Philippines in 2011 with the acquisition of a 54 percent stake in BK Titans Inc for P65.50 million.

BK Titans owns PERF Restaurants Inc., which operates the Burger King franchise in the Philippines.

"We'll see the opportunities but what's important for now is for us to see closely how we are doing in Burger King, whether we will be able to compete and grow that very well," Baysa said.

Ariella Arida is Miss Universe 3rd runner-up

by Miguel Dumaual, ABS-CBNnews.com Posted at 11/10/2013 4:04 AM |

MANILA -- The Philippines' Ariella Arida on Sunday (Manila time) finished 3rd runner-up in Miss Universe 2013, a feat she dedicated to her countrymen who were devastated Friday by the world's most powerful typhoon this year.

Venezuela's Gabriela Isler won the title, besting 85 other candidates during the coronation night held at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia, which hosted the 62-year-old pageant for the first time.

Said to have one billion viewers in over 190 countries, the event was announced in the opening minutes to be dedicated to the Philippines and Vietnam, neighboring countries in the path of destruction of super typhoon "Yolanda" (Haiyan).

Isler, a marketing graduate and professional model, was crowned by Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo of the United States to become the new titleholder for one year.

The runners-up, in order, were Spain's Patricia Rodríguez, Ecuador's Constanza Báez, Arida, and Brazil's Jakelyne Oliveira.

The Philippines' bet was notably the only Asian in the Top 5.

Fan favorite

Dubbed an early favorite leading up to the finals night, Arida earned a spot in the Top 16 after winning the official online polls. She then took the stage in a red bikini for the swimsuit portion, along with her fellow semifinalists.

Advancing into the Top 10, Arida proceeded to parade in a yellow Alfredo Barazza dress for the evening gown segment.

In the final round of the pageant, Arida was asked by judge Tara Lipinski: "What can be done about the lack of jobs for young people starting their careers around the world?"

The Filipina beauty answered: "For the people who have lack of jobs, I do believe that we people should invest in education and that is my primary advocacy, because we all know that if everyone of us is educated and well aware of what we are doing, we could land into jobs and we could land a good career in the future. Education is the primary source and ticket to a better future."

Isler, meanwhile, was asked by judge Steven Tyler: "What is your biggest fear and what is your plan to overcome it?"

She responded through an interpreter: "I believe that one may have a lot of fears but nonetheless, this is nothing negative. I believe that we should all overcome our fears, and this in turn, would make us much stronger. And thusly, we can become stronger persons. As soon as we overcome our fears and we're sure of ourselves, we can face any challenge."

Of the five finalists, Arida was the only candidate who answered in English and without an interpreter.

With her 3rd runner-up finish, Arida replicated the success of Shamcey Supsup, the Philippines' candidate in the 2011 pageant. Janine Tugonon and Venus Raj finished 1st runner-up in 2012 and 4th runner-up in 2010, respectively.

The Philippines is still hoping to produce its third Miss Universe winner after Gloria Diaz in 1969 and Margie Moran in 1973.

'For the Philippines'

A day before the coronation night on Sunday, Arida, through a video on the official page of Miss Universe on Facebook, addressed her fellow Filipinos amid the destruction brought by "Yolanda" in several parts of the Philippines. Said to be the strongest typhoon in recorded history to make landfall, "Yolanda" wiped out entire structures and left at least 138 dead as of Saturday night, according to the local disaster management council, with hundreds more feared unaccounted for. "This fight, I offer to you guys, to all my Filipino people," Arida said in the online video. "It's for the Philippines. Keep safe and keep on praying. Be strong."

Amid news of the widespread destruction, Filipino pageant fans kept hopes high for Arida to take home the crown. Leading up to the finals night, Arida was widely tipped to win the title after her string of special appearances in pre-pageant events.

Viewing parties were held at different venues, including a government-sponsored gathering in her home province and packed bars, despite the coronation night kicking off at 2 a.m. local time.

In Moscow, some 700 supporters carrying banners and Philippine flags were gathered by the Filipino Association in Russia at the Crocus City Hall. The strongest cheers were heard whenever Arida took the stage, ABS-CBN News' Dyan Castillejo reported Sunday from the venue.

The same zeal for international pageants was also evident early this year, particularly with the back-to-back wins of Filipinas Megan Young and Mutya Datul in Miss World and Miss Supranational, respectively.

Philippines’ Rubilen Amit Wins 2nd Women’s World 10-ball Pool Crown

By Cris Larano blogs.wsj.com November 5, 2013, 1:22 PM

MANILA—Filipina cue artist Rubilen Amit became the first ever two-time women’s world pool title holder on Monday evening, when she defeated 2011 champion Kelly Fisher from Britain.

With the win, Ms. Amit joins Efren Reyes and Ronnie Alcano as the Philippines’ only two-time world champions in pool, and emerges from a slump that had kept her from the limelight she basked in five years ago.

That was when she won her first women’s world championship crown, in 2009, at the inaugural edition of the Yalin Women’s World 10-Ball Championship.

The race-to-10 finals, which were held this year at Resorts World in Manila, saw Ms. Amit trailing Ms. Fisher 0-2 early in the match. She would have dropped 0-3 if not for a double-rail shot that sent the 9 ball – which was hidden behind the 10 ball – into to the corner pocket, a shot that she had to call as per 10-ball rules.

The 30-year-old Ms. Amit, who has been playing since the mid-1990s, has racked up several gold medals for pool in the Southeast Asian Games. Despite the weak start on Monday and errors that gave Ms. Fisher a back two-game lead at 6-4, Ms. Amit eventually found the form that has produced her past victories.

Eventually she leveled the score at 6-6, then won the last three games thanks in part to Ms. Fisher’s errors, which included her sinking the five ball in the corner instead of the side pocket, as she had called. Ms. Amit secured the crown with a 10-7 margin.

“I’m very happy because I’ve been in a slump for the longest time,” Ms. Amit said during a post-match interview aired live on television. “I was thinking ‘Just give me a chance. If there’s a chance, I’ll do my best.’”

Ms. Amit’s best earned her the title, and $21,000. Ms. Fisher pocketed $10,000.

Forty-eight international players participated in the tournament. Ms. Amit was the only Filipino left in contention after the group stages and was wildly cheered on by Filipino fans. She reached the finals via a come-from-behind win over Taiwan’s Tsai Pei Chen in a semifinals match earlier on Monday.

Philippines to develop 8 hubs for international cruise liners

By: Darwin G. Amojelar, InterAksyon.com November 1, 2013 5:56 PM

MANILA - The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and the Department of Tourism have identified eight ports as tourism gateways that could become international hubs for cruise liners.

According to PPA, these are the ports in Davao, Bohol, Boracay, Cebu, Metro Manila, Puerto Princesa, Subic, and Zamboanga.

PPA said developing cruise ports is vital considering that the Philippines has now become one of the major cruise destinations in Asia.

Last month, Star Cruises-owned Super Star Gemini had its inaugural launch at Pier 15 Super Terminal in South Harbor, Manila. Star Cruises operates from Xiamen, China, while South Harbor is operated by Asian Terminals Inc. (ATI).

Several cruise calls have been recorded since March 2010 that included a German cruise ship docking at the Port of Iloilo, Portugal’s MV Princess Danae at the Port of Davao, and Royal Carribean’s Legend of the Seas at the Port of Puerto Princesa as part of the cruise ship's seven-night "Borneo Explorer Cruise."

“The Philippines welcomes this growing interest in cruise tourism in various strategic locations in the country,” PPA general manager Juan C. Sta. Ana said .

Given this, PPA has lined up various port development programs for cruise terminals, he said.

"These include the ports of Puerto Princesa, Currimao in Ilocos Norte and Catagbacan in Bohol,” he added.

PH wins Bright Spots prize in global summit

By Rose Eclarinal, ABS-CBN Posted at 11/02/2013 9:06 AM

LONDON - Philippines bagged the Bright Spots award at the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Summit in London. The winning entry: Citizen Participatory Audit (CPA) is declared the Bright Spot.

In the summit’s final plenary session on Friday afternoon, the Philippine delegation headed by COA Commissioner Heidi Mendoza, Director Aida Ayaso Talavera and Vivien Suerte-Cortez received the award.

"This is actually a sign that we are slowly opening up. We are starting to have more participation. We are starting to have more transparency and accountability. It is something good for the Philippines and something to look forward to," said Vivien Suerte-Cortez who is representing COA's Civil Society Organization (CSO) partner.

"Ang aasahan ng Pinoy, mas magiging seryoso ang gobyerno ng Pilipinas sa mga commitments na sinulat niya sa OGP, una na sa citizen participatory audit," she added.

"It couldn’t be more timely than today when we are having many attacks and many challenges in the public accountability. There are many issues back home. There are many pressures in the supreme budget institution, like us, but we are taking a very independent stand," said Commissioner Heidi Mendoza.

COA’s entry projects are exploring ways in which citizens can directly participate in the audit process for government projects and contribute in safeguarding efficiency and effectiveness in the use of public resources.

The four pilot projects are the DPWH CAMANAVA Flood Control, the DepEd Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) Infra for School Buildings Phase 1, Quezon City’s Solid Waste Management Program, and Marikina City’s operation of barangay health centers.

Philippines received the highest vote from the summit participants and the public, beating the six other finalists: Chile, Estonia, Georgia, Indonesia, Montenegro and Romania.

The Open Government Partnership (OGP) aims to promote transparency, fight corruption and harness new technologies to strengthen governance.

Vigan makes it to New7Wonders Cities finals

BY CAROL RAMORAN POSTED ON 10/22/2013 12:44 PM via rappler.com

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippines' own historical city up North, Vigan, has made it to the finals of the New7Wonders Cities campaign.

Vigan will be vying for one of the 7 slots against:

Athens, Greece
Bangkok, Thailand
Barcelona, Spain
Beirut, Lebanon
Casablanca, Morocco
Chicago, USA
Doha, Qatar
Durban, South Africa
Havana, Cuba
Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam
Istanbul, Turkey
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kyoto, Japan
La Paz, Bolivia
London, United Kingdom
Mendoza, Argentina
Mexico City, Mexico
Mumbai, India
Perth, Australia
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Prague, the Czech Republic
Quito, Ecuador
Reykjavik, Iceland
St. Petersburg, Russia
Seoul, South Korea
Shenzhen, China
Vancouver, Canada

The global election which will determine the New7Wonders will end on December 7, 2014 and will go through 3 elimination phases. The foundation's president, Bernard Weber, praised the panel's choices for the finalists, adding that the list is "particularly exciting in its variety."

Weber says honoring various cities all over the world will create a "global memory" and is rather timely as — for the first time in history — more than half of the planet's population dwell in cities.

"Going forward, the New7Wonders Cities campaign will encourage debate about how cities should respond to the challenges of the present and the future. By voting in this worldwide campaign, people everywhere can decide the 7 cities that best represent the achievements and aspirations of our global urban civilization," said Weber in an official release from New7Wonders.

In early October, the New7Wonders Foundation released a shortlist of 77 qualifying cities. This list included two more cities in the Philippines: Cebu and Iloilo. However, it was only Vigan who made it to the finals.

With its cobblestone streets and an architecture that combines elements of Asian and European design, Vigan City is unique in the Philippines. Vigan is also one of the 28 Official Finalists in New7Wonders Cities.

PH best performer in Asia-Pacific in gender equality–WEF

By Doris C. Dumlao Philippine Daily Inquirer 9:23 am | Friday, October 25th, 2013

MANILA, Philippines–The Philippines is the best performer within the Asia-Pacific region when it comes to gender equality and the country has likewise improved its global ranking to 5th place from 8th in the 2013 Global Gender Gap Report.

This latest annual gender equality-focused report of the World Economic Forum ranked 136 countries on their ability to close the gender gap in four key areas: economic equality, political participation, health and survival and educational attainment.

“The Philippines remains the most advanced country in the (Asia-Pacific) region in terms of gender equality, ranking 5th in the global index. It improves as a result of advances in economic participation and opportunity, a subindex of the report, as well as having a strong score in terms of political participation,” WEF said in a statement issued on Friday.

The report said the Asia Pacific region had now closed 67 percent of its gender gap but still lagged every region in the world except the Middle East and North Africa when it comes to economic equality between the sexes having closed only 56 percent, the report said.

The eighth annual edition of the Report ranked Iceland closest to equality for the fifth year running. It, along with Finland (2nd), Norway (3rd) and Sweden (4th), has now closed over 80 percent of its gender gap.

“Countries will need to start thinking of human capital very differently – including how they integrate women into leadership roles. This shift in mindset and practice is not a goalpost for the future, it is an imperative today,” said Klaus Schwab, WEF founder and executive chair.

“Both within countries and between countries are two distinct tracks to economic gender equality, with education serving as the accelerator. For countries that provide this basic investment, women’s integration in the workforce is the next frontier of change. For those that haven’t invested in women’s education, addressing this obstacle is critical to women’s lives as well as the strength of economies,” said Saadia Zahidi, co-author of the report and head of the Women Leaders and Gender Parity Programme.

Elsewhere in Asia, China continues to hold 69th position after improving its overall score. Japan loses four places to 105, mainly because of a decrease in the number of women in parliament which overshadows a rise in its economic participation and opportunity score. Korea, on 111, slips three places largely on account of a decrease in labor force participation and perceived wage equality.

Germany, in 14th place, is the highest-placed individual G20 economy, although it fell by one notch from 2012.

The best performer among BRICS (the grouping of fast-growing emerging markets coined to refer to Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) is South Africa at 17th place, followed by Russia (61th), Brazil (62nd), while the two Asian BRICS ranked lowest, with China at 69th and India at 101st.

At the global level, the report found that in 2013, 96 percent of the health and survival gender gap had now been closed. It is the only one of the four pillars that has widened since the report was first compiled in 2006.

In terms of education, the global gender gap stood at 93 percent, with 25 countries having closed their gaps completely. The gender gaps for economic equality and political participation are only 60 percent and 21 percent closed respectively, although progress is being made in these areas, with political participation narrowing by almost 2 percent in the past year.

In both emerging and developed countries alike, relative to the numbers of women in tertiary education and in the workforce overall, women’s presence in economic leadership positions is limited.

Europe’s progress towards eliminating its gender gap is polarized, with countries from Northern and Western Europe presenting a stark contrast to those from the South and East. Spain came in 30th, having closed 72 percent of its gender gap. France ranked 45th (70 percent closed) while Italy ranked 71st.

Latin America’s leading nation when it comes to closing the gender gap is Nicaragua. At 10th place, it has now ranked in the top 10 for two years, largely on the back of a strong performance in terms of political empowerment. Cuba is next (15th), followed by Ecuador (25th). Mexico climbed 16 places to 68, due to increases in the number of female parliamentarians and the number of women in professional roles. Brazil held firm at 62nd despite a slight improvement in its overall score.

Pinoy scientist wins at American Biz Awards in San Francisco

Danny Dangcalan of the Philippine Star
A nutritional product made from the anti-cancer properties of soybeans developed by a Filipino scientist was awarded the 2013 People’s Choice Stevie Awards for Favorite New Consumer Product and a bronze Stevie Award at the 11th American Business Awards in San Francisco.

Filipino research geneticist Alfredo Galvez received the award for LunaRich X, which he developed in partnership with Reliv International, manufacturer of patented nutritional supplements.

A research scientist at the Center of Excellence in Nutritional Genomics at the University of California in Davis, and director of research for the Missouri Plant Science Center in Mexico, Galvez said Lunasin’s discovery was a “lucky mistake.”

Galvez shared that he discovered an extraordinary plant peptide as an accidental by-product of the work conducted in a gene cloning laboratory at the University of California in Berkeley in 1996.

He named the by-product Lunasin – a Filipino word for “to heal” or “to remedy” –-which was shown to disrupt cancer cell division and prevent tumor formation.

He conducted further research on the cancer-inhibiting peptide and found that Lunasin, in its bioactive form, had the ability to essentially turn off the bad genes, and turn on the good genes in our bodies. In other words, Lunasin, found in miniscule quantities in soybeans, makes cells less receptive to disease.

Galvez’s findings were published in the Journal of Cancer Research and other prestigious journals. Since then, Lunasin has become one of the most heavily researched and scientifically supported nutritional compounds available today, with more than 50 published papers from more than 25 research institutions.

Lunasin is a naturally occurring peptide that has been identified as responsible for many of soy’s documented health benefits, including cholesterol support and general cellular health, Galvez added.

Lunasin is one of the first bioactive compounds identified to affect expression and promote optimum health at the epigenetic level. The epigenome, which literally means “beyond the genome,” is a higher level of complexity within the cell, he explained.

Last Thursday, Galvez presented to 30 medical doctors in Bacolod the Lunasin technology.

He explained how the Lunasin technology is applicable to their various disciplines and discussed possible clinical trials in the country.

Galvez said LunaRich X was the only nutritional product honored in the 2013 US Stevie Awards. The online poll for Favorite New Products had more than 20,000 votes cast for its 34 product categories.

Galvez was born and raised in San Fernando, La Union. He finished both his BS in Plant Physiology and Genetics and MS in Genetics and Plant Breeding at the University of the Philippines-Los Baños, and his PhD in Plant Physiology and Genetics at the University of California in Davis.

Galvez was one of the outstanding Filipino-Americans in science and technology honored by President Aquino at the 2010 Philippine Development Foundation awards.

Kobe Paras is FIBA 3×3 U-18 Worlds Slam Dunk King

Kobe Paras reigned supreme in the FIBA 3×3 U-18 World Championships dunk contest besting the USA’s Demonte Flannigan and Spain’s Antonio Morales in the finals at the Merdeka Square.

The high-flying La Salle Greenhills star scored a perfect 30 points on his first 3 dunks in the championship round before wounding up with a total of 117 points to beat the Spanish and American challengers.

From his very first dunk, Paras already set the tone for a colorful night after bringing a motorcycle to the hardcourt. To make the slam more special, his teammate, UAAP Juniors MVP Thirdy Ravena, sat on the bike before Paras went baseline for a thunderous finish.

Paras’ second dunk was even more spectacular, jumping off two players — Ravena and a cager from Spain — and finishing with a one-handed tomahawk.

Paras amassed 30 points each on both dunks.

Demonte Flannigan failed to convert on his between-the-legs slam which left Paras and Morales in the one-on-one finale.

Morales, however, ran out of creative tricks even as Paras continued to soar in the finals with an off-the-glass windmill to take home the slam dunk title with a score of 57 to Morales’ 51.

Paras was already a crowd favorite yesterday when he attempted a “tribute to Lebron James” dunk in the qualification stage. He earned a perfect 30 after an off-the-glass alley-oop to himself which he finished with a reverse jam to top 14 other participants.

It was a sweet gold for the Philippines, who were booted out earlier in the tournament after a 3-4 card in Pool B didn’t allow them to make the Last 16.

Paras also made headlines in July this year, when he dunked on NBA superstar LeBron James during the 4-time MVP’s visit for Nike. Watch this video by YouTube user Herculean Breed.

The 15-year-old Kobe Paras is the son of the only PBA Rookie-MVP Benjie Paras.

Paras made it to the semifinals by doing this between-the-legs slam that earned a perfect score from the judges.

Megan Young wins Miss World, Philippines 1st ever

Megan Young was crowned Miss World 2013 in Bali, Indonesia, making history as the first-ever Filipino winner of the title since the Philippines’ debut in the pageant in 1966.

The 23-year-old actress bested 126 other international candidates to become the successor of China’s Wenxia Yu, who conferred the crown on Young at the pageant’s culminating event held at Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center.

France’s Marine Lorphelin finished second, while Ghana’s Carranzar Shooter placed third. Completing the Top 6 were Spain’s Elena Ibarbia, Brazil’s Sancler Frantz, and Gibraltar’s Jessica Baldachino (People’s Choice).

Hosted by Miss Scotland 2012 Jennifer Reoch and Mister World 2010 Kamal Ibrahim, the coronation night featured cultural numbers, as well as performances from British boyband Blue.

Young’s win was bolstered by her strong showing in various pre-pageant challenges, including the Top Model competition, which she won; the Beach Fashion tilt, where she ranked fifth; and the Multimedia Contest, where she placed fourth.

Other preliminary competition winners recognized on Saturday were Netherlands’ Jacqueline Steenbeek, for the Sports Challenge; Brazil’s Frantz, Beach Fashion; India’s Navneet Dhillon, Multimedia; and Nepal’s Ishani Shrestha, Beauty with a Purpose. Young also zoomed up in rankings after her performance in the Question & Answer portion, where all top six candidates were asked, “Why should you become Miss World?”

Thanking the Indonesian audience in their native language, Young, who wore a pink Francis Libiran gown, brought up the “core values” of Miss World and how she hopes to embody these “to help society.” Before giving her answer, Young also got to talk with Reoch about the strong cheer for her from the audience. They were waiting for her profile reel to be set up — it initially showed a different candidate — when Young quipped, “I actually brought half of the Philippines here!”

“Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” is now in Filipino

J.K. Rowling’s phenomenal first book “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” has been translated into Filipino on its 15th anniversary.

Published by Lampara Publishing House, Inc., and translated by Becky Bravo, “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: The Filipino Edition” was released last Sept. 14 at the Manila International Bookfair (MIBF).

Lampara is the children’s book publishing arm of dominant romance book publisher Precious Pages Corp. (PPC). PPC has been releasing licensed Filipino translations of international best sellers such as Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight”; Suzzane Collins’ “The Hunger Games”; and E.L. James’ “Fifty Shades of Grey.”

PPC president and general manager Segundo “Jun” Matias Jr. said their previous translations have generally been selling well. Matias said translating the “Harry Potter” books was a no-brainer. “It’s a bestseller,” he said in Filipino. “I couldn’t let it pass me by without trying to translate it. We have Lampara, which caters to children and personally it’s one of my favorites.” Even though many Filipinos have already bought and read the “Harry Potter” books in English, Matias said he believes there’s an audience for the Filipino translations. “I think there are many who want to read this in Filipino. It’s easier to understand in our own language.”

Matias first approached “Harry Potter” publisher Scholastic about a possible translation at the London Book Fair last year, then hunted down the contact details of Rowling’s new management. “It was a bit difficult,” Matias admitted, but his hard work paid off when he signed a contract for the translation of “Sorcerer’s Stone” in March, 2013.

For this Hagrid-sized task, Matias chose children’s story writer Bravo, a past winner of the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Literature and the National Children’s Book Award. Bravo has already translated over 50 books for Lampara over the last four years. “I liked her work in both English and Filipino because it’s fluid and easy to read,” Matias said. Scholastic also vetted Bravo, asking for her resume when Matias asked for permission to translate the book.

Filipina Karting Queen bags awards in Houston Grand Prix

JV Villar, ABS-CBN North America Bureau

Representing Asia and the Philippines, auto racer Michele Bumgarner made her mark at the Grand Prix of Houston Indycar series. Michele’s debut on the 2013 series serves as a qualifier and preparation for her to run the full pro Mazda Championship series in 2014 in Florida. She not only made the top ten cut, but brought home two awards. “I’m so proud of her to representing the Philippines as I’m a Filipina mommy, so proud of her and good luck for the rest of her race,” said Monina Bumgarner, Michele’s mother.

Competing in a sport dominated by men, Michele knew, the challenge was tough, she qualified finishing number 14th for race number one. “You want her fit right into the car because when you actually feel a cargo is loose, it’s not your arms that feel it first it’s your tail feathers so you want her to be right up against that car married right tight in it she can become one with the race car that’s the safest place for her to be,” said Lee Ann Nash of Nash Performance Group.

But with focus and determination, Michele found her way around the Indycar series circuit on day 2, finishing 9th.

She received the Staubli award and Quarter Master Hard Charger award for a gain of four positions in #6 Mazda Philippine Race Car. “I’m very happy very thankful to all the supporters out there, keep supporting, proud Pinoy, thank you to Mazda, Philippines for all the help, said the Michele, dubbed as the “Asian Karting Queen.”

Michele is now on her way up to the full Indy route championship in Florida next year as the first Asian to get this far.

Terminal of Phl's first 'world-class' seaport opens

(philstar.com) | Updated October 9, 2013 - 5:26pm

MANILA, Philippines - The Manila North Harbor Port, Inc. (MNHPI) formally launched the passenger terminal of a new seaport that can accommodate two to three million passengers yearly.

MNHPI chairman Michael Romero said at the launching event Wednesday that the well-secured complex will "completely erase the image" of the old harbor long considered a haven for criminals.

"The complex is designed to provide passengers with an unforgettable and unparalleled experience and is the first of its kind in the Philippines. Passenger comfort is given utmost attention," Romero said.

The executive said the new 11,600-square meter terminal at Pier 4 at Manila North Harbor now has a highly trained security team and detection devices such as x-ray scanning machines and other passenger facilities such as convenient waiting areas, ticketing floors, shoot booths and 2,000-sq meter parking space.

"The complex aims to elevate the status of Manila North Harbor as the country’s premium seafaring hub comparable to passenger terminals abroad," he added.

Passengers will be charged P35 to P50 terminal fee, which is "way lower" than airport terminal fees of P200 to P500.

Transportation and Communications Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya, meanwhile, hailed the new structure as the country's first "world-class" seaport.

"Ang pormal na pagbubukas ng bago at world-class na North Port Passenger Terminal Complex na ito na patunay na hindi magpapahuli ang Pilipinas pag dating sa moderno at de-kalidad na pasilidad," Abaya said.

He suggested that the image of the North Harbor be enhanced to attract passengers without giving them reason to fear for their security.

"Try to have elementary and high school kids come over and have their field trips here and that way they’ll get a very good impression of North Harbor and see it in a different light," Abaya said.

Romero added that about P4 billion has so far been poured in by MNHPI, San Miguel Corporation and other partners into the port project.

He said they committed P15 billion to the government for its construction and development. - Camille Diola with PNA

World’s largest flower found in Aurora

mb.com.ph by Jonas Reyes October 8, 2013

Rafflesia manillana, world’s largest flower, was recently found in the lush forest of the Sierra Madre in Aurora by a team of biodiversity experts.

MANILA, Philippines – The Rafflesia manillana, world’s largest flower, was spotted recently in the lush woodlands of the Sierra Madre in Aurora.

When Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) forester Max Millan Jr. saw the beautiful flora during a routine biological survey, he was left with just three words to say: ”It was beautiful,” he said.

The team, led by Dr. Edwin Tadiosa, found the Rafflesia flower while documenting reptiles and amphibians inside the 5,000-hectare Aurora Memorial National Park.

“The flower is in full bloom, with a diameter of 17 centimeters,” Millan added. DENR regional executive director Maximo Dichoso said the Rafflesia manillana, which is only found in the country, is in DENR’s List of Threatened Species.

“The presence of this flower only proves the rich biodiversity in Aurora’s forests,” said Dichoso, adding that this parasitic plant can also be found in Mt. Natib in Bataan, Mt. Makiling in Laguna, Mt. Labo in Bicol, and Samar Island Natural Park in Samar.

Considered critically endangered, Rafflesia manillana is a genus of tropical parasitic plants that do not contain a chlorophyll, which means it is incapable of photosynthesis.

Scientists estimate that there are 17 Rafflesia species throughout Southeast Asia. Rafflesia manillana is big, but a little smaller compared to another variety, the R. arnoldii, found in Indonesia. The R. arnoldii can grow crowns up to a meter across and can grow up to 12 feet high and weighs up to 11 kilos.

In the Philippines, there are at least 11 recognized species of Rafflesia, four of which are found in Luzon. The biodiversity expedition found at least 304 species of plants and 142 species of animals thriving in the 17,000-hectare forests in Central Luzon’s tallest mountain, including six other plant species that can only be found in Luzon.

Philippine govt to spend US$1.2b to relocate informal settlers

channelnewsasia.com

MANILA: Metro Manila is home to 14 million people, with four out of every 10 residents living in slums.

The Philippine government is trying to relocate these "informal settlers" by 2016 and it is building affordable houses, and having schemes to help them buy their own homes.

67-year-old Ana Arbolante moved to Manila from Quezon province 40 years ago in search of a better life with her husband and one-year-old daughter.

Her husband found a job as a cab driver but his pay was not enough to pay for the rental of a 15 square metre apartment, which was US$150 a month. Eventually, they found a spare lot beside a creek and made it their home.

"If you're paying rent, you have debt all the time. I'd rather use the rent money to buy food for my grandchildren," said Ana.

However, a typhoon in 2009 caused the river to overflow and it flooded their house.

That finally convinced Ana to take part in the government's relocation plan for informal settlers.

She said: "Our weather now is very unpredictable. I worry every time I go out for the safety of my grandchildren. Whenever it rains, I fear that the water will rise again and there will be landslide and they might be harmed."

The Philippine government has allocated US$1.2 billion to relocate some eight million informal settlers by 2016.

The priority of the government right now is to remove 100,000 informal settler families living along danger zones especially with the onslaught of the typhoon season.

Each family will be given about US$400 to help them in their new relocation sites.

The government scheme also helps families to buy their own homes.

By paying US$20 a month for 30 years, recipient families will eventually own a 25 square metre house, and the lot that the house occupies.

However, the government has said it cannot solve the problem on its own and has asked for private sector help.

Habitat for Humanity International CEO Jonathan Reckford said: "If a family doesn't have a decent place to live, the children don't stay healthy. If they're not healthy, they don't do well in school.

"If they don't get an education, they don't have the chance to lift themselves up, and so we would say that housing is a pre-requisite for families to be able to lift themselves up."

Non-governmental organisations, like Habitat for Humanity, help alleviate the problem by offering home ownership programmes, similar to the government scheme.

For Justinia Oroque, who has been living in a dumpsite for 30 years, the prospect of having a house to give her children is a dream come true.

She said: "People respect us more now and they do not call us squatters anymore. Before, people looked down on us.

"Now that we have transferred here, it feels good that people look up to us already and we are not ashamed to say that we live here in our own house."

At least 10 housing projects are in progress to accommodate some 6,426 informal settler families in danger areas in Metro Manila.
